Big Dub’s BDSM Camp Returns

It is no secret that EDM festivals harbor an array of diverse people each contributing unique ideas, practices, and interests to the culture. In celebration of open-mindedness and discovery, Camp Big Dub Sexy Mountain, a BDSM themed camp, is back again this year. While a BDSM themed camp may seem like an obscure attraction at an EDM festival, on the contrary, its presence couldn’t be more fitting; “EDM Festivals and BDSM both are places of alternative culture, self-exploration, and new experiences without fear of judgment”, stated spokesman and co-founder of Camp BDSM, Martin Joseph in an interview.

Camp BDSM emphasizes educational outreach by teaching Intro to Consensual BDSM 101 (Bondage/Discipline – Dominance/Submission – Sadism/Masochism), as well as alternative relationships, rope bondage and suspension. Additionally, the camp features more advanced demos of safe rope, knife, and fire play.

In addition to demonstrations and open play, Camp BDSM encourages open group discussions to answer questions in which all are welcome to participate. “Those who have come to Camp BDSM have come from all backgrounds, from long time kink lifestyle members, individuals with little to no sexual experiences, to those who are just curious”, stated Joseph. Although the community is still a subculture, recently, BDSM has infiltrated the mainstream media, opening the doors to broader discovery and discussion. However, the exposure to mainstream culture has also contributed to stigmas and misconceptions associated with BDSM; E.L James’ novel and subsequent film 50 Shades of Grey has largely left an impression on many of what BDSM entails.

However, widespread backlash from the BSDM community discredited James’ portrayal of BDSM and alternative relationships. Moreover, 50 Shades glamorizes an abusive relationship in which the main character, Christian Grey, “uses coercion, threats, and manipulation of a sexually inexperienced woman to gain control of every aspect of her life” said Joseph.

Joseph, a member of the BDSM community for over a decade, emphasizes that “unlike 50 Shades, BDSM is 100% consent ONLY”, likewise, the BDSM community and Camp BDSM “prides itself on respect towards everyone. Camp BDSM does not judge or dismiss anyone who wants to learn proper, safe and consensual aspects to the alternative lifestyles”. According to Joseph, Camp BDSM’s ultimate mission is to “support and help others expand their own self exploration and knowledge of their sexuality”.
